Video Transfers: ¾” U-Matic to Digital
Introduced by Sony in 1971, U-Matic tapes were originally intended for domestic purposes—with the first model that could record having a built-in TV tuner. Because of its quality and high price, it became standard for industrial and educational television production but was too expensive to gain widespread usage among home videographers at the time.

U-Matic video recorders were eventually replaced by Betacam and VHS, which became more popular as cassette formats. The last U-Matic recorder was released in 1981.

Due to the obsolescence of this system, professionals have trusted VideoMedia for years to digitize their U-Matic tapes and transfer them to a digital support of their choice. Our experienced technicians can convert your footage into a digital format that’s easy to edit, share and store. We’re experts in every aspect of video digitization and conversion, so you can be confident that your U-Matic tapes will be handled with care and efficiency.

At VideoMedia, we've been converting and restoring media for 42 years, so we know what it takes to protect your memories for generations to come. We know when it comes to preserving your important moments, only the highest quality will do - and we’re happy to deliver just that!
How Does the VideoMedia Transfer Process Work?

First things first: come by our Montreal location to drop off the U-Matic video cassettes you’d like to have converted to digital, or have them delivered to us via courier.

We want to make sure that every tape that comes into our hands is treated with care and respect. That’s why we’ve developed an extensive process for handling the tapes that come to us. If there are any issues with your tapes and whether any repair work is necessary, we will be sure to let you know. If repair is possible (and only if it can be done without compromising the integrity of your original recording), it will be offered as an option.

Once your tapes have been inspected, our technicians will meticulously scan your U-Matic cassette tapes at a high bit rate using specialized equipment and software to a digital format of your choice. That way, you’ll be able to see all the details of your irreplaceable memories preserved. This procedure takes place in-house at VideoMedia, so you don’t have to worry about any manipulations from third-party contractors.
